What sustained heat actually damages

Batteries, first and worst

Heat is the primary killer of car batteries, well ahead of cold. A battery parked in direct sun through a Dubai summer ages dramatically faster than the same battery in a basement. If yours is more than two summers old and the car is parked outside, have it tested before it strands you rather than after.

Seals, hoses and rubber

Door seals, window seals and coolant hoses all harden with heat cycling. Hardened door seals show up first as wind noise and later as water getting in. Hardened coolant hoses simply fail, usually without warning.

Dashboard and interior trim

Adhesives soften, trim lifts, and leather and vinyl dry out. Once a dashboard has started to lift it does not go back. A windscreen shade is genuinely worth using every single day.

Paint and clearcoat

Prolonged UV exposure degrades clearcoat, particularly on horizontal surfaces — roof, bonnet, tailgate. It is gradual, and the point at which it becomes obvious is usually past the point where polishing alone will fix it.

Tyres ageing from the sidewall

Heat and UV harden tyre compound and cause fine sidewall cracking. A tyre with plenty of tread can still be past its useful life. On outdoor-parked cars, age matters as much as depth.

Practical things that actually help

  • Use a windscreen shade every time. It is the cheapest protection available and it works.
  • Have the battery load-tested before each summer if the car is parked outside — a test takes minutes.
  • Ask for seals and hoses to be checked at each service rather than only when something leaks.
  • Have tyres checked on age as well as tread depth.

If your car struggles to start after a weekend, get the battery and charging system tested rather than assuming it will be fine. Heat-damaged batteries fail suddenly rather than gradually.

It genuinely helps on horizontal surfaces, which take the most UV. Whether it is worth the cost depends on the car and how long you plan to keep it — we will give you a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
